| Subject: Front Adjustable Coilover Question. 2010-12-06, 7:27 pm | |
| Just to prove that I don't know it all, I'm at a impasse as to how to proceed. Right now, I have the stock strut housings with Mooketh coil over sleeves and KYB strut inserts. I already had to cut off 1 inch of spring to get my car to sit where I want it to, and of course it is riding on the springs. The rears are lowered all the way down with the KYBs and Mooketh coil overs. But the front with Cusco Adjustable Camber Plates make the front end sit higher. My Airdam sits appox. 6 inches off the ground, that is where I want it. Coupled with the adjustment of the rears it sits perfect for me, but no strut insert travel I have checked out D2s, they would give me the adjustability needed. but they will not just sell the fronts??? MR-2 inserts??? Don't like having to cut this and weld that to get them to work, and that is just my opinion.Mooketh Fully adjustable front coil overs....I see a set on E-Bay for $400.00, But still have questions on whether or not that is the best way to accomplish what I want. Please help me out. I know that I should be posting this in the help forum. But seeings how we are all new to this site, I thought it best to post here, Thanks, Bill | |

Thanks, Bill Damn, you cut the springs on the MK1 sleeveovers!? I've had those all the way down, without cutting them. I still had enough strut travel, but when I put on the camber plates it f'd everything up. If I raised the car two inches it would have been just fine... but raising the car is something I don't know how to do... LOL. Well, since you cut your springs you'll for sure have to get a new set of springs if you ever want it to handle correctly. Easily ordered from Tein or others. I believe the MK1 springs are 7" (maybe 6" I can't remember) unsprung height and 70mm diameter, in a 8kg rate(front). http://949racing.com/teinracesprings.aspx If you want to be frugal about it, you could order a set of sleeveovers for an accord or eclipse and just use the springs out of that set... which are likely from the same manufacturer in China anyway. As far as gaining strut travel here are your options: 1. Remove camber plates (with new springs) 2. Raise car with (with new springs) 3. Shorten and weld front housings to run MR2 struts (with new springs) 4. MK1 front coilovers on ebay, still requires cutting and welding 5. Full set of D2's, still requires cutting and welding. 6. Raise strut towers, not recommended. Actually... did you install the mk1 sleeveovers as well as the stock spring tophat?? You're not supposed to use that top hat. I'm asking because there's no way you would need to cut the MK1 sleeveover springs. -Robert

-Robert Thanks for the advice. Yea, the Cusco Adjustable Camber plates did me in too, but have to run them. With the sleeves adjusted all the way down coupled with the Cuscos and Mooketh springs prior to cutting them only gave me 3/4" strut travel. (Stock spring tophats were not installed). I will have to decide which way I want to go. I like the Adjustability of the D2s and will most likely go that route. "If they would only sell me just the fronts i'd be happy", But buying the full set won't kill me either, the rear set up that is on the car now works great and I really don't want to replace it. Us that like um low....Have to pay for it Thanks Again for the advice, Bill

| Hmmm, those cusco plates must be really thick at the bearing...
You could try MK1's new designed plates: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MK1-STARION-FRONT-ADJUSTABLE-PILLOW-BALL-CAMBER-PLATES-/160479592768?hash=item255d544140
And it looks like T3 is selling plates as well: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FRONT-CAMBER-PLATES-STARION-CONQUEST-83-89-/300414880538?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item45f21f4b1a

Robert, I don't think the Cuscos are the problem, But who knows?? Just to let you know how I feel about alternative solutions to my problem....Let me re-interate: I do know that Mooketh and D2 Fully Adjustable coilovers require Cutting and Welding of the stock strut housing. I also know that the MR2 inserts require the same thing. My problem with the MR2 Mod is this, And this is only my opinion, and I have been wrong in the past and most likely will be in the future: By just cutting off a small amount of the Top of the stock strut housing to get the Gland nut threads and then cutting out a section of the stock housing and re-welding it causes me concerns. I don't know a lot about coil over suspension modification on these cars, but I would rather cut the stock strut housing 4 to 6 '' from the bottom and then weld the the new slip on coil over tube from the Mooketh or D2s on the bottom of the strut housing. That is just me thinking it will be stronger doing the struts that way and nothing against you, or the way you have done your mods. I do appriciate your help !!! P.S. Pictures of my Cuscos can be found on Photobucket. Thanks, Bill

Thanks, Bill Haha, no worries. I understand your point of view as well. In all actuality I could have cut at the bottom and done the same thing!! Hmmm... if I do it again I'll try it that way. -Robert

-Robert Thanks, I just didn't want you to think that I don't appriciate your advice. Maybe I should have kept it at stock height.....NAW. I had a lowered 1962 Pontiac Catalina when I was 16...The cops loved to pull me over and ticket me for being too low I use to go to the drive-in movies with my girlfriend and always got high centered on the hump...Made her get out to rock it back and forth to get it off Back then a buddy of mine had a 1956 Ford Victoria. Hell, you could barely get a pack of Marlboros between the bottom of his frame and the asphalt. That's lowwwwwwwww. Bill

| Mr I can't post in the correct section "19cturbo" on sqc. Always posts his VM questions and everything else in the B.S. section. When a mod actually moves his thread he will cry about it. Venting lol.. http://www.starquestclub.com/forum/index.php?showuser=12209 |
